Steve Carmichael

  • Director of Jazz Studies

An avid supporter of a total musicianship concept, inclusive of all genres of music, Steve Carmichael has performed classical, jazz, contemporary entertainment and creative music saxophone in more than 30 countries.

Mr. Carmichael's major teachers include James Houlik, Wildy Zumwalt and Susan Cook (classical saxophone); The New Century Saxophone Quartet (chamber music); Joseph Wilcox-Jenkins; David Stock (counterpoint/theory); Bob Shepard; and Mike Tomaro (jazz studies). He has performed on saxophone, flute and clarinet with the San Diego Symphony, Louis Bellson, Bill Watrous, The Spectrum Saxophone Quartet, Pete Christlieb, NHK Orchsestra Toyko, Hino Teramsu, Bi-national Mambo Orchestra, Bobby Caldwell, George Lewis, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, University of California San Diego "Side A/Side B" ensemble, and La Jolla Symphony, among others.

His current interests include systems theory, phenomenology, and cultural and social systems as they relate to influences in the creative learning/performance process of musicians.
